The destination

Why Lake Nakuru?

Lake Nakuru is a soda lake in the Rift Valley, 156km northwest of Nairobi. It's surrounded by an 82km² national park that's small, fenced, and extraordinarily dense with wildlife. You can see white rhino, black rhino, Rothschild's giraffe, leopard, lion, buffalo and waterbuck — often within a 4-hour drive — without leaving sight of the lake.

The lake is famous for its flamingos. At its peak in the 1990s, there were 1.5 million flamingos here. Numbers have fallen and risen — when the lake's water level changes, the algae they feed on shifts, and the flamingos move to Lake Bogoria. Right now, flamingo numbers are recovering. We'll be honest with you about current sightings before you book.

What makes it special

Four reasons Lake Nakuru earns its place on your trip

01

Both rhino species

Lake Nakuru is one of the easiest places in Kenya to see both black and white rhino in a single drive. Around 70 white rhino and 30 black rhino in the park. Sightings are near-guaranteed within 24 hours.

02

Rothschild's giraffe

An endangered subspecies — the white-stockinged giraffe. Lake Nakuru is one of three places they survive in Kenya. Reintroduction programme has been running since the 1970s.

03

Baboon Cliff & Out of Africa viewpoint

The escarpment views over the lake at dawn — pink rim, blue water, mist. The Out of Africa film crew used these views. Bring a camera.

04

Day-trip-able from Nairobi

Only 2½ hours from Nairobi, so it can be done in a day. We strongly recommend an overnight: dawn at the lake is the photograph, and you can't be there at dawn from a Nairobi hotel.

"At dawn, the lake is pink. By afternoon, the rhinos are at the watering hole. You will not believe how much you see in a single day here." — Field journal, October 2025

Honest answers

Frequently asked

Honestly: depends on the year. Numbers fluctuate with the lake's water level and salinity. In good years (recent ones), you'll see large pink rims along the southern shore. In low years, most flamingos are at Lake Bogoria. We'll tell you the current state before you commit.
Often, yes — Bogoria has been more reliable in recent years, but it's smaller and lacks the rhinos and giraffes. Best of both: combine Nakuru and Bogoria in 3 days (+$960). Ask if interested.
Different. Nakuru is small and dense — you cover the whole park in a day. It's about rhinos, the lake, and the diversity of species in a small area. The Mara is about scale and big cats. Amboseli is about elephants and Kilimanjaro. Many guests do all three in a 7-day circuit.
Yes — and it's the most popular Kenya safari combination. Day 1: Nairobi to Nakuru. Day 2: Nakuru to Mara. Days 3–4: Mara. Day 5: back to Nairobi. From $2,490 per person. Ask for the combined itinerary.
Yes — short drive distances, dense wildlife, easy logistics. The Sopa lodge is family-friendly. Children under 7 don't pay park fees.
