A flamingo-rimmed soda lake where rhinos walk past your bonnet
Lake Nakuru is a soda lake in the Rift Valley, 156km northwest of Nairobi. It's surrounded by an 82km² national park that's small, fenced, and extraordinarily dense with wildlife. You can see white rhino, black rhino, Rothschild's giraffe, leopard, lion, buffalo and waterbuck — often within a 4-hour drive — without leaving sight of the lake.
The lake is famous for its flamingos. At its peak in the 1990s, there were 1.5 million flamingos here. Numbers have fallen and risen — when the lake's water level changes, the algae they feed on shifts, and the flamingos move to Lake Bogoria. Right now, flamingo numbers are recovering. We'll be honest with you about current sightings before you book.
Lake Nakuru is one of the easiest places in Kenya to see both black and white rhino in a single drive. Around 70 white rhino and 30 black rhino in the park. Sightings are near-guaranteed within 24 hours.
An endangered subspecies — the white-stockinged giraffe. Lake Nakuru is one of three places they survive in Kenya. Reintroduction programme has been running since the 1970s.
The escarpment views over the lake at dawn — pink rim, blue water, mist. The Out of Africa film crew used these views. Bring a camera.
Only 2½ hours from Nairobi, so it can be done in a day. We strongly recommend an overnight: dawn at the lake is the photograph, and you can't be there at dawn from a Nairobi hotel.
"At dawn, the lake is pink. By afternoon, the rhinos are at the watering hole. You will not believe how much you see in a single day here." — Field journal, October 2025
A typical itinerary — but flexible. Tell us how you like to travel and we'll adjust pace, accommodation tier and activities to suit you.
Pickup from Nairobi at 8am. Drive via the Rift Valley escarpment — the viewpoint at the top is unmissable. Arrive Nakuru lodge for lunch around 12:30. Afternoon drive into the park: the lake shore for flamingos, the Makalia Falls area for rhino, and Baboon Cliff for sunset. Dinner at lodge.
Coffee at 5:45, drive at 6:15. The early light over the lake is the trip's photograph. We aim for both rhino species before breakfast. Late breakfast, pack out by 11. Drive back via Lake Naivasha (optional 2-hour boat ride at extra cost — hippo and fish eagles). Arrive Nairobi by 5pm.
We work with all of these properties directly. Pricing below is per person, twin-share, all-inclusive of meals and game drives where stated.
On a hill 7km inside the park boundary, overlooking the lake. Sixty cottage rooms, big pool, friendly staff. Wildlife wanders through the property — buffalo on the lawn most evenings. Fair value.
Closer to the lake, 67 cottages on the eastern shore. The terrace has the best lake-flamingo view of any property. Rebuilt in 2022, modern interiors. Best for photographers.
Boutique tented lodge on Baboon Cliff with the best view in the park, hands down. Eighteen tents, hosted dining, private decks. Most romantic option. Premium price reflects the location.
